Mother Earth Birth

Embracing Nature and Respecting Science

Mother Earth Birth was founded to support all pregnant families during birth and to meet the growing need for labor advocacy in our world community. It is now widely recognized that choosing to add a labor support person to one’s birth team yields many positive health benefits. The memory of your birth experience may last a lifetime, and can have a powerful effect on your self-esteem and confidence.

My personal goal is to help women trust in their innate natures, strong bodies and the birth process. The moment that a baby is born is spiritually wondrous and magical!  It is my wish for mothers to experience the birth of their babies as fully as possible, in line with their personal intentions, remaining grounded in current obstetrical science.

I have been a Registered Nurse working on the labor and delivery unit since 1974, and in 1989 I achieved Nurse Clinician status as an Inpatient Obstetric Nurse through the National Certification Corporation (NCC). I am an NCC-certified Fetal Heart Monitoring Specialist. For 20 years, I taught the Association of Women’s Health and Neonatal Nurse’s (AWHONN) certification course, "Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices", to physicians and medical professionals. In addition, I taught the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) "Neonatal Resuscitation Program" (NRP) for 15 years.

In 1990, I became certified as a Childbirth Education Specialist through Lamaze International, and I have taught Childbirth classes consistently ever since.

In 2020, I became a certified Doula through the International Doula Institute, integrating my 45 years’ of clinical labor and delivery and childbirth education experience into my doula training.

In addition to the above, I am a 500-hour certified yoga instructor with the Integral Yoga Institute and have been practicing yoga since the early 60’s, following the lead of my favorite Beatle, George Harrison. I currently teach the Anatomy and Physiology segment of the Integral Yoga Institute of Princeton’s teacher training course, and in 2015 I became certified as a Registered Yoga Prenatal Therapist through Matrika Prenatal Yoga.

My final and most significant qualification as a childbirth specialist was having my own four beautiful children! I was also lucky enough to have assisted during the labor and delivery of my four grandchildren.

My personal goal is to help women learn to trust in their innate wisdom, strong bodies, and in the birthing process.

Mother Earth Birth believes that happy and healthy outcomes for parents and babies arise when modern medicine and innate wisdom coexist.

What  to Expect

If interested in my services, please get in touch with me via the "Contact and Register" tab above. After I receive your information, I will reach out to plan a virtual “Meet and Greet”.  During the Meet and Greet, we will determine if we are a well-suited birthing team with similar goals.  Will we enjoy a positive working relationship together? There is no pressure to commit to my Doula Services after our the "Meet and Greet". It is recommended that you reach out to me as early as feasible, but of course every pregnancy and birth is unique and I am always flexible with timing.

Following the decision to move forward together, I will send a contract defining the terms of our doula and client relationship.  The contract may be reviewed for up to one week, as I secure your due date on my calendar.  Once accepted and signed, the contract reserves your dates on my calendar from 38 through 41 weeks gestation. Upon signing, the first non-refundable payment is due.

A second virtual “prenatal meeting” is planned to discuss obstetrical and medical history, your partner’s role, birth planning, birth decisions, paths to relaxation, preparedness for breastfeeding, homecoming with a newborn, and more.

After our initial few meetings, we will plan subsequent meetings and/or phone calls, to be scheduled intermittently as need and urgency dictate.  Should you wish, I will be available to accompany you to (2) obstetrical or ultrasound appointments.  The private Childbirth Education Class and Prenatal Yoga* sessions, if selected, will be at a mutually agreeable date and time.  Outside of these planned meetings, I am always available and delighted to talk by phone about any pregnancy-related issues or concerns that may arise or consider an in-person

meeting

During the weeks surrounding your due date (38 – 41 weeks gestation), I will be prepared to arrive at the hospital within 30-90 minutes from your call requesting my support.  At the hospital, I will be an advocate for your health and birth decisions, contributing my clinical expertise and providing emotional support. I will interpret all medical procedures and oversee their successful execution, including monitoring the fetal heart rate when necessary. Additionally, I will be available to guide you through breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and gentle massage.  In the event of operative delivery, I will be available to accompany you to the operating room suite, with my continued support, provided that hospital regulations permit. Following your delivery I will remain at your bedside for 1-2 hours, ensuring your safety and comfort, and assisting with your newborn feeding method of choice.
